Roped Climbing Beginners Course
If you have decided that climbing is for you then a beginners’ course is the perfect introduction. Our Roped Climbing Beginners course is for those wanting to learn how to safely use the auto belays, top-rope climb indoors and use the Ledge facility independently. The course assumes no previous climbing experience and will equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to become a competent top-rope indoor climber and auto-belay user.
You’ll not only be learning a new skill, but you’ll also be gaining a whole new activity to enjoy whenever you like and a whole new community to be a part of. Whether you intend to use climbing as a workout, as an opportunity to meet new people, would like to take friends climbing or have ambitions to one day climb the world’s biggest walls but don’t know where to start – this is the course for you.

Top Rope and Auto-belay Climbing Refresher
For those who have climbed before but would like or need a skills refresh. Maybe you’ve climbed before but are feeling a bit rusty, maybe your skills could do with an update to indoor best practice or maybe you’ve just lost some confidence in what you’re doing – it’s not unusual! This fully supervised session will get you safely up to speed, giving you the competence and confidence to feel happy visiting the wall independently again.
Whether you’re an experienced climber who’s had a break or is looking to update or a recently signed-off top rope climber looking for a little extra guidance, this course looks at your existing skill-set and will bring it up to modern best practice.

Learn to Lead Climb
You may be an experienced top-rope climber and belayer looking for the next challenge in climbing or an indoor climber with ambitions to take your climbing outside one day – learning to lead indoor is a natural next step in your progression. Our expert and highly qualified instructors will introduce you to lead climbing gently and progressively, giving you all the skills and techniques necessary to safeguard yourself and your partner as you venture into new terrain.
Considered by many as a more exciting and more mentally and physically demanding way of climbing, lead climbing can be immensely satisfying both for climber and belayer. It is also vitally important to get all aspects of the practice right to maximise safety. This is where we come in.
Over 2 x 2hr sessions our instructors will give every aspiring leader the best possible grounding for their practice and have you leading safely in no time. Gold standard is the only standard at The Ledge.
What you’ll learn:
– Equipment required and usage
– How to clip the quickdraws (the clips on the wall).
– Clipping positions, technique, common errors and fixes
– Foot position around rope
– Active belaying and giving soft-catches
– Safe falling technique
– Situational awareness, route reading and optimal positioning
– Use of modern equipment such as assisted braking devices and OHMs.

Costs: £75 p/p.
Following the completion of the course, an additional hour can be arranged for those not quite there at a cost of £35. Your instructor will discuss this with you as necessary.
