Kids can start their vertical journey at The Ledge at any age but if they’re 7yrs+ then the NICAS – National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme – is definitely the way to go! Designed to get your kids climbing with a progressive syllabus, this UK-wide scheme promotes climbing development and accredits individual achivement in indoor climbing walls.

No matter which route you take, our fully trained instructors are here to help the next generation reach new heights and get hooked on climbing in a safe group or individual environment.

FAQs
Kids & Youth

We allow – and encourage – wee ones of all ages to have a go as long as they are supervised by their parents.

Under 14’s need to be directly supervised by an adult.

Under 18’s need to be registered at reception by a parent or guardian, after which they can boulder/climb unsupervised if deemed competent.

We run a full set of nationally accredited progressive climbing pathways/courses called NICAS, our own kids’ programmes and basic fun introductory taster sessions.

No, kids under 14 must be closely supervised by a registered adult unless they are engaged in a course/programme where they will be monitored by a qualified instructor.

Under 18’s need to be registered at reception by a parent or guardian, after which they can boulder/climb unsupervised if deemed competent.

We must have parental consent for kids engaged in any course or class, even school and groups courses.

This consent must be from the parent/guardian – not teacher, grandparent or other responsible adult.

Consent can be given online.

That’s great! But the same rules apply – ie even if your child has consent to climb with you during your week or evening visits, if they come with the school or a club, parental/guardian consent must be given.

Registered adults can take up to 2 kids climbing on the ropes and in the bouldering area up to the limit of their own registration (roped and/or bouldering).

Kids must register with the U18 participation agreement at reception. Once deemed competent 14-18yr olds do not need adult supervision.

Non-climbing parents can watch their kids from the mats having become registered members and watched the bouldering induction video(s).

This ensures the supervising adult understands the rules of the centre and safe bouldering behaviour/etiquette.

Yes, but we will need to have signed consent from each child’s own parent/guardian.

This can be given online by filling in the relevant Participation Agreement.

We require all U16s to wear a helmet when taking part in a roped climbing course.

We provide helmets for all those taking part in courses if needed.

You do not need to wear a helmet when bouldering and you must not wear a helmet when using autobelays.
